Scientific Method

Commit To Be Fit was a program where we were able to work with a patient with Parkinson's Disease. Not only can I describe the scientific method, but through Commit To Be Fit, I was able to apply it. In this program, we had our own patient that we followed for 8 weeks. We started the program by performing a complete evaluation on the patient. This allowed us to see the deficits so that we knew what areas we need to work on. Once we see the deficit, we hypothesized as to what problem was causing the deficit. We performed treatments based on the deficits that were seen, (which was like the experiment.) After 4 weeks we performed a reevaluation. This enabled us to see if the treatments that we performed helped to improve the noted deficits. If they did, the we could conclude that our hypothesis was correct. If not, we needed to come up with a new hypothesis/ experiment.

In our thesis project we compared the effects of isotonic and plyometric training on the function of the lower extremity. We hypothesized that there would be a significant increase in functional ability with both training methods. We further hypothesized that plyometric training would be more effective in improving function. We then designed an experiment taking 2 groups through the training methods (and having 1 group as a control.) We were able to apply the scientific method to our research.

These are examples of 3 of my reflective practitioners that I had to complete for patients in clinic. Progression of my ability to apply the scientific method to problem solving is evident. In my first RP, I was able to get to the problem, but not in great detail. As time went on, I learned more and was able to apply it to my problem solving.
